What Is Strategic Deterrence?
Strategic deterrence is the effort to prevent an opponent from taking a harmful action by convincing its leaders that the costs and risks would outweigh the expected benefits.
The primary purpose of deterrence is prevention. A country maintains certain capabilities and communicates its willingness to use them so that an opponent chooses not to begin an attack.
Although strategic deterrence is often associated with nuclear weapons, modern deterrence can also involve conventional forces, missile defence, intelligence, space systems, cyber capabilities, economic measures, diplomacy, and international alliances.
